 2017 Preview 


       Escambia Academy completed the 2016 season with a 8-5 record. With their 3-1 region record and a second place finish in Class AA region two, the Cougars earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Last year the Escambia Academy Cougars reached the AISA-AA State Championship game only to fall just short of claiming a title. They were defeated by Autauga Academy in the State Championship game 28-21 in Troy.

       The Cougars had some tough luck last season as they lost five games, all by less than eight points.

       Since 2010, Escambia Academy has gone a combined 54-31. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class AA over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Escambia Academy has managed to compile a record of 135-140. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class AA and 21st in the AISA. Their last losing season was 2010.

       The Cougars are led by head coach Hugh Fountain who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 42-19 over the past five seasons at Escambia Academy. Under his direction the Cougars have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have won one region crown with Coach Fountain. Coach Fountain led Escambia Academy to a state championship in 2014.

       Coach Fountain's overall record as a head football coach in twenty-nine season stands at 201-121 (62.4%). His 201 wins rank st among active coaches in the AISA. Over the course of his career, Coach Fountain's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-one times and won three region championships.

       The Escambia Academy Cougars will play in Class AA region two during the 2017 season.

       The Cougars should be in contention for a playoff spot in region two this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2010 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2017.

      Senior Trey Turner returns after rushing for 341 yards on 18 carries and scoring 5 touchdowns.

       The Cougars open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Northview FL on Friday, September 1 at Bachelor Field.

       Escambia Academy and Northview FL have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Cougars have a 2-1-0 record against Northview FL. They last met in 2016 with Northview FL winning by a score of 21-14.

       Escambia Academy returns AISA All-State Senior defensive back Fred Flavors. He was named to the first team last season. The Cougars also return Senior athlete Louie Turner. He was named to the first team.
